The Wednesday league limped over the line last night to complete another highly competitive season, with most games having already been played to give teams the night off to watch the last of the local Champions League action for this season.
The only game played in division 1 was a dead rubber, but ABCDE FC will be looking forward to next season having finished second in their debut season in the top flight. They concluded their season with an 11-5 win over dethroned Champions Mrs Pickfords.
A major let down in division 2, where the shoot out for second place didn't happen as Gamma Express were forced to cancel, giving Bredbury the 10-0 win and second place.
Only the one game played in division 3, which saw runners up Sammys Midget Gems end the season on a high with an 8-5 win over Doobie FC.
Only one game played in division 4 as well, with runners up Wigan Abbey Avenue suffering only their third defeat of the season, 9-6 to The Wasters who drag themselves to safety on the back of this win.
Only the one game.......... division 5, but one of major significance as Team Sky pulled off a surprise 7-5 win over Team Reem to deny Reem the runners up spot and promotion. This win still could not save Team Sky from the drop, but they will probably fancy their chances of a better run at it next season.
Division 3 had a whopping 2 games played, and a dramatic last day change at the top. Stockport Deaf Club picked up a forfeit 10-0 win over Nothing Toulose, meaning Team Mikey needed to beat Kevin Mallen by 13 goals to take the title. An 18-5 win means that they won the league by one goal! Hunter Douglas have done quite well since joining the Wednesday league, and will probably start as favourites for the division 6 title next season after ending the season with a 15-2 victory over Sporting Riff Raff.
The new Wednesday season starts next week, with double headers to allow teams to have time off over Christmas. Plus, we now know that we have no Champions League issues for at least the next 9 months (sorry United and City fans)! Now is the time to join, so give us a call on 01614429988 or email stockport@powerleague.co.uk.
